Universiti Putra Malaysia

Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Mohammad Lutfi Othman, PEPC, ACPE, CEng, PTech, REM (Type 1 & 2), CPMV, a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). I received my B.Sc. degree with Magna Cum Laude distinction in Electrical Engineering from the University of Arizona, USA, in 1991, and obtained my M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Power Engineering from UPM in 2004 and 2011, respectively.

As an academic and a researcher, I am a founding member of the Centre for Advanced Power and Energy Research (CAPER), now known as the Advanced Lightning, Power and Energy Research (ALPER), UPM. As a practicing certified professional engineer, I have over three decades of professional experience in electrical engineering consultancy involving the design, tendering, contracting, and project administration of electrical services installations.

My research interests encompass power system protection, computational intelligence and artificial intelligence applications in protection algorithms, adaptive and numerical protective relays, power quality, smart grids, microgrids, distributed generation, energy efficiency management, electrical safety, electrical services engineering and project management. I am particularly recognized for my contributions to the application of Rough Set Theory and intelligent techniques in power system protection research.

I have secured more than RM2 million in research funding and has authored over 160 journal papers and chapters in books and more than 100 conference publications. My research outputs include several software tools, copyrights, and patents. A Senior Member of IEEE and IEEE Power & Energy Society, I regularly serve as a keynote speaker, session chair, reviewer, and technical committee member for numerous international conferences and serve as an editor in international journals in the fields of power and energy engineering.
